I am somewhat disappointed at this year’s Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. I moved here in June 2005, so this is my fourth July 4th in the Cradle of Liberty. Before I delve into all the negatives, let’s recount a the positives.
- Jack Williams doing “Casey at the Bat” was cool
- The Pops themselves were awesome, as usual
- Katie Mayhew, 16 years old, enchants the Boston audience
- There was no Bob Lobel on the local WBZ coverage this year
Most of what I have to bitch and moan about has to do with the WBZ local coverage and the CBS national coverage and not with the concert itself.
First off, its 2008, there is no High Definition coverage? Are you kidding me? This is the one time that Boston can put on a show for the nation (that is not sports related) and we have to watch a stupid little square video on our nice big flat screen TVs?
Also, was it me or was the audio spectacularly crappy this year? During the 1812 Overture and the national broadcast, the audio was popping and my parents watched the coverage in Indiana and said the audio went in and out many times.
For the national broadcast, Craig Ferguson…again. Can we say you suck to Craig, “everybody!” How many times did he say “everybody” and tried to lose his Scottish accent. Ugh!
Finally, I suppose the fireworks were “spectacular”. I watched them from where I live on Beacon Hill. The first ten or fifteen minutes were great as, but because of the weather system, there was no breeze, thus all the smoke from the fireworks just stayed over the Charles River, obscuring the fireworks display. So that was disappointing.
I should have gone home to Indiana where my brother in law and his neighbors spent over $2,000 on fireworks for a celebration tomorrow evening.
